What is Reiki?

The word "Reiki" means "mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign." It comes from the Japanese words "rei" (universal) and "ki" (life energy). Reiki is a type of energy healing which targets the energy fields around the body.

Reiki has been around for thousands of years. Its current form was first developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist called Mikao Usui, who reportedly taught 2,000 people the Reiki method during his lifetime. The practice spread to the U.S. through Hawaii in the 1940s, and then to Europe in the 1980s.

Similar to acupuncture or acupressure, energy healing aims to help the flow of energy around and through the body while helping to clear blockages of stagnated energy, which over time contributes to an unbalanced state of being, potentially contributing to a decline in general wellness and contributing to increased illness.

Many individuals who seek out Reiki therapy have expressed concern over being subjected to a constant barrage of stress. Or, they may have recently experienced a traumatic or incredibly stressful situation. They may have come to accept as fact, negative beliefs and thoughts which weigh down their very existence. In cases such as these, the body is no longer able to efficiently self-regulate its natural balanced state which can ultimately result in a significant decline the health of one's mind, body and soul.

These individuals may agitate extremely easy, or are prone to angry outburst, in addition they may suffer from a variety of physical ailments like headaches, stomach aches, muscle tension and pain. Reports of depression, anxiety and restlessness are common.

Unfortunately, to seek relief many individuals compound their health problems by turning to unhealthy habits such as over or under-eating or abusing alcohol or drugs.
